Before & After

Here are a few pictures of the dogs who have undergone amazing transformations since their rescue, definitely proof that a rescue is but a diamond in the “ruff.”

Hair Matters!
Everyone knows the need for that perfect cut. Here are a few dogs who got just that right style for starting out their new life.

BA1
Virgil was rescued from the streets of Los Angeles alone, hungry and scared. His fur was so matted and dirty that he had to be shaved since it would be much too painful to remove the matts. One year later with a full growth coat he is recognizable as the purebred Bijon he always was.

Now see what a little TLC along with a bath and cut can do for some of our rescues?  How can anyone let such a pretty dog get so gross?

Below are a few of Lyle’s friends who are looking top-drawer in their new coifs.

Back from the Edge

BANell
Poor Nell.  Who knows what happened to this little dog.  A Maltese/Yorkie mix, otherwise known as a “Morkie,” she turned up at the South Central shelter a matted, dirty, skinny mess.  She clearly had been abused; God knows what this little doll had been through.  She suffered trauma to her head at some point – perhaps dropped, kicked, or thrown - who knows. As a result, she had some odd behavior and was a bit cranky sometimes.  She’s deathly afraid of a hairbrush so we are certain she was beat with one.  A bath, haircut, good food, and a fantastic foster home that was patient and understanding with her has made such a difference.  Little Nell has come so far since the day we got her from the shelter.

BACostco
Costco was found in the parking lot of a Costco store. Skinny, dirty and just a mess. He is a senior dog with heart problems so he takes a pill a day much like humans with a similar condition. He’s plumped up on a good diet and has grown a beautiful coat of shiny auburn fur.

Simple Solutions
Sometime our rescues come to us with health problems that are completely curable.
Sadly, many pet owners don’t understand that often there is a simple solution to their pet’s problems and instead, discard them.  By the time we get them, their problems have usually grown tenfold.

BAHerbie
Mange is an easily treated skin condition that is often caused by inadequate care and poor nutrition.  So many dogs come into the shelter with mange and are euthanized because the appearance of the disease looks so scary that people don’t want to deal with it.  It just takes time, medication and good food so the dog can recover.  Herbie was bald and crusty when we rescued him.  Now, he has the most beautiful silky coat of fur we have ever seen!

BACallaAt three months and only 10 pounds, Calla Lily was bald and crusty when we rescued her.  Her skin was so bad and her fur was so gone we couldn’t even guess what breed mix she might be!  Now, she has a beautiful shiny black and brown coat … we still don’t know what she is though!

BAAlexander
Alexander’s problem could have been easily avoided by a simple once a month flea treatment. But left on his own, this poor little guy developed a terrible skin condition perpetuated by fleas combined with being completely ignored/ untreated by whoever owned this guy.  Look what a little TLC and quality food can do - like a whole new dog!

BAChelsea
Poor Chelsea was used as a breeding machine and then tossed aside like she was trash.  Rescued from the South Central shelter she was adopted eventually by a lovely young woman who loves her tremendously.  Look close at her ‘after’ photo, you’ll see she’s got a pink pedicure!

BAMitzi
Here is another little dog that should be pampered and spoiled but instead was neglected and ignored.  Itchy uncomfortable skin and hair loss made for a very miserable if not painful life.  A little TLC, medicated baths and good food and she bounced right

back. Look at her beautiful black coat now!

BAAbbey
Aren’t toy poodles meant to be pampered and spoiled?  Well, not poor Abbey.  Mange, ringworm, giardia, and pneumonia . . . you name it, she’s had it!  Had she been properly cared for none of these health problems would have come up. A regime of good nutrition, a simple antibiotic and basic medication led Abbey to a full recovery.

BAArchie
Archie was the star of our Second Chances campaign in 2005.  He weighed only three pounds when he was rescued and 99% hairless from a severe case of mange.  He had an upper respiratory infection and was listless.  While it was simple to cure his medical problems, his spirit seemed crushed.  After his adoption, his entire demeanor changed, both body and soul had finally healed.

Poochie Plastic Surgery
Being that L.A. is the plastic surgery capital, even our dogs are getting a little work done . . .

BAMickey
Look closely at Mickey’s damaged ears in the ‘before’ photo.  Flesh and cartilage were eaten away by flies.  Talk about slow, insane torture!  Now look at the ‘after photo’ – Mickey had an “earectomy” to remove the damaged area to even out the ears!  I think he’s ready for his close-up, Mr. DeMille.

Just in Time
The Bill Foundation is known by the animal shelter workers as "the rescue that takes the dogs others will not take". We try to help all dogs and often arrive just as someone's time has run out. We take a chance on the “lost causes”. Here are a few dogs with less than a 50% chance, who surprised everyone and pulled through.

BAPhoebe
Little Phoebe was three months old and all of three pounds when we rescued her.  Her nose and eyes were oozing and swollen shut, and she also had a terrible upper respiratory infection. The doctor didn’t think she would make it.

Miraculously she pulled through and day by day she got better and better.  She blossomed into a spunky, vibrant healthy puppy and was eventually adopted to a lovely family with kids.

BACooper
Cooper was run over by a car and left for dead.  With numerous broken bones and a hefty surgery bill a certainty, nobody would save this poor boy from the shelter.  We took him in and did some fundraising for his surgeries.  Several months and several surgeries later Cooper was on the mend!  Now look at him, all fluffy and white, running around and playing like a poodle puppy should!
