Helping those who need it most . . . Our Special Needs & Senior Dogs
Here at Bill Foundation our main goal is to place as many healthy dogs into loving and safe homes as we can. However our work does not stop there. We often rescue the most hopeless, the sick or injured animals. As long as we are reasonably sure that the dog has a good chance to recover their health and enjoy a good quality of life we will be there for them. We have taken dogs from shelters that have broken bones, epilepsy, internal problems, drastic skin problems, and respiratory problems. Also, our rescues sometimes have undiagnosed issues, such as heart defects, not visible at the time they are saved from the shelter. Once we commit to a dog, we treat them as if they were our own. We provide the medical treatment that is required to return them to health. On the rare occasion when a dog if found to be terminally ill and in pain with no hope of recovery, they are humanely and lovingly put to sleep.
Fortunately, most of our rescues fully recover and go on to find new homes. Some dogs, though basically healthy have a condition such as limited vision which puts them in our special needs category. Most function very well in spite of their handicap. We are very honest about chronic conditions with potential adopters. Our special needs dogs are featured below.
Another special group is our senior dogs and you can meet them (See Seniors). Again, all of the seniors are available for adoption and in general good health, just a little older.
Take a minute to view our Success Stories below about plucky dogs and their visionary owners, who together have found love and companionship.
Meet our Special Needs Dogs
Harriet Harriet is an adult pure breed red Pomeranian. She weighs 8 pounds. Harriet is completely blind. This doesn't hold her back, not at all! Once she is settled into a new environment and learns where things are she can get around just fine. She is sweet and affectionate and lots of fun. She is a gorgeous little girl with a wonderful personality. She is already housetrained. She has already learned the layout of her foster home and can go in and out on her own if the door is open (we're working on the doggie door). She can sense where you are and does her best to stay with you and get your attention for petting. She is otherwise healthy and happy.
Domingo Domingo is an 8 lb. Chihuahua who had a rough start but is now ready to find a loving home. He has come a long way since Bill Foundation rescued him and we are happy to say he is in a foster home and doing wonderfully. Domingo loves to give kisses, snuggle on the couch and take long relaxing walks. He is working on his house training and practicing his obedience skills. He would probably be happy with another small dog or in an only dog home. He has met cats but didn’t seem interested so we think he would be ok with a cat sibling. From the way Domingo reacts to certain noises and movements we are sure he was abused, so it takes this little guy some time to warm up to people and trust them. Once he feels safe though, he’ll be your best friend and protector. He is your typical Chihuahua – little dog who has a big dog attitude! Domingo is a very special little boy who deserves a very special home. To know him is to definitely love him!
Morris Morris is a male purebred Maltese, 7 pounds and about 7 years old. He is good with other dogs and cats. Morris is very friendly, outgoing, spunky and lively. He loves to be held and cuddled. Morris was turned in by his owner because the family was moving and didn't want to take Morris with them! Unfortunately, after his exam, we learned that the growth on his nose is cancerous. We had it removed and biopsied. It came back malignant and, because of its location, the surgeon was not able to remove the entire mass. He is on chemotherapy and progressing well. He is an amazing dog- very spunky, very sweet, you would never know he's ill!
Gabriella Gabriella is a Papillon/Pomeranian Mix. She is small and ideal for a retired person who is home all the time or someone who wants a companion to go EVERYWHERE with them. This dog adores .... no, make that DEMANDS attention. She is about 12 lbs, 6 year old Papillion/Pommie mix girl who is a perfect lap dog. Her entire purpose in life is to adore YOU! Gabriella wants to be the center of your world and will reward you with utmost loyalty and complete devotion. Gabriella is housetrained, smart and eager to please. Like all our small delicate dogs, best in adult home, or home with older children. Currently in a foster home with other pommies and bunnies. She does like to play with the other dogs and will chase after the bunnies, only wanting to play. She is not destructive and loves to he held! We have learned that she has a mild seizure disorder, that is manageable with (inexpensive) medication. She will need to have routine blood work done to monitor her medication.
Special Needs Success Stories
Nanette Sweet little Nanette came to us after her eye was so seriously neglected we thought it would have to be removed. She had was is commonly known as Dry Eye. In her case it was so bad the eye had shriveled to half its size and the socket was collapsing. And while she will remain blind in that eye, she did not have to have surgery, just drops for the rest of her life. Nanette was adopted on October 1st and now lives in LA with another dog, Pug.
Ollie When Ollie came to us he was seriuosly injured from having been hit by a car. His sternum was broken and he had to remain crated for around 6 weeks. After healing completely, he was mauled by a large dog and again underwent surgery. He has since healed completely and was adopted by his foster mom. He now lives in Burbank with 3 big dogs and a foster dog
Bobby Bobby is an adorable Pom boy who was rescued from North Central Animal Shelter. He is now in foster care, has been groomed, and is looking like the pampered pet that this purebred Pom was meant to be. He is about 6 years old and weighs about 12 lbs. If you love the breed, this is that adorable combination of a giant personality in a small dog body. Super intelligent: learned to sit in 1 day. He plays with his foster's other dogs who range in size from 5 lbs to 105 lbs, (although he IS a little bossy with the big guy). HOUSETRAINED! Has not made a mistake since his first day in foster care. This wonderful Pom would be happy to be an only dog with someone who is mostly home, or fine as a second dog too. Like most Poms, not suitable for children. We have learned that Bobby has a mild seizure disorder, that is manageable with (inexpensive) medication. He will need to have routine blood work done to moniter his medication. Bobby was adopted by his foster parent and now lives in Beverly Hills. Congrats Bobby!
Gidget Sweet, 5 lb. girl rescued from the Orange County Shelter on 4-17. Little Gidget is about 8 years old but still has a lot of life left in her. Like a lot of tiny dogs, she has a collapsed trachea which causes her to cough when she is stressed or excited. Because of her condition, she cannot be anethesized to be spayed. In 2003 Gidget found her forever home.
Olivia Olivia was one of our special needs dogs. She is completely blind and one of her eyes was shrunken due to what the vet believed was blunt force trama. She will require drops in her eyes for the remainder of her life. She adores all people and loves to sit in your lap or at your feet. She constantly wags her tail because she is so happy just to be alive. She was adopted by a wonderful woman in Beverly Hills who later passed away and then again by a UCLA Sorority house mother and now lives the good life with 55 girls after such a rough beginning.
Annette Annette is a small, adult female Fox Terrier. She is very affectionate and active. This is a high energy breed, and Annette, at 6 or 7 years old, is no exception. She loves to be held and is about 12 lbs. An old, healed injury (that was never properly attended to) to right front foot hardly slows her down. She does drag her foot a bit, so needs to wear a little bootie to prevent further injury. A fashion opportunity? She's an adorable cuddly cutie, probably housetrained. A very loving companion who just needs another chance! Annette was adopted in April of 2003 into her new forever home.
Patch Patch is a male Pit Bull Terrier precious 10 weeks old, 18 lb. baby who was born with only 1 eye. But don’t let his singular sightedness fool you. Patch is full of puppy energy. This handicap(?) won’t stop Patch from leading a completely normal and happy life. Patch has had his first set of puppy shots. A typical playful pup, he needs someone who is home to train and nurture him. Patch has since been adopted by a Hollywood celeb and went to his new home in May 2003 - congrats Patch!
Mitchell Cute & small, longhaired chihuahua mix boy. Mitchell is about 3 years old and weighs about 10 lbs. He's very affectionate! He was just diagnosed with epilepsy, and will need routine blood work and medication the rest of his life to keep it under control. He just started mediction and is responding nicely. Adopted in January of 2004.
Keller Keller is an extremely affectionate and very active 9 month-old pit bull mix. She is great with children and loves other animals. A perfect day for her includes wrestling and playing with other dogs at the dog park and then cuddling up on the couch. Keller is in the process of being house-broken and is doing very well. She requires a little extra time and attention to train since she is deaf, but she catches on quick and will make a very loyal and loving companion for the person or family who has the time and devotion to teach her. Keller is spayed and is up-to-date with all of her vaccinations. Adopted in March of 2004. Way to go, Keller!
